Sleep – A Necessity of Life
Sleep is the ultimate need of our everyday lives. We all have the physical need and the psychological urge to get those few hours of sleep each night in order to be able to function the next day. It not only keeps us physically healthy and going, but mentally sane as well, and charges us up to deal with highs and lows of the next day.
What Makes Sleep So Significant?
Sleep is a reparative process which allows a variety of vital functions in our body to take place. These include protein synthesis, bone growth, body structure regeneration and hormonal secretion. Most people require 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night. In some cases, however, people may do with six hours, while some stretch it up to even 9-10 hours of beauty sleep. However, it is not the quantity alone but also the quality of sleep that determines just how well you have been sleeping. Therefore, a deep, restorative sleep is what we all need at the end of a long, tiring day, so as to gear up for yet another day that waits.
Sleeping Hard or Hardly Sleeping?
In these fast-paced, career-driven and stress-laden lifestyles, it is no less of an achievement if you could even manage to make yourself lie down and relax for some time. But come to think about it. It is not just the lack of sound sleep that is irritating, but also the sheer inability to fall asleep in the first place. Doesn’t it become too overbearing at times when you are trying so hard to catch some sleep, but your body simply refuses to even blink an eye? You desperately wait for the night to get over so you can at least get on with some chores. But time just seems to have stopped and you realise that it is not only frustrating but exhausting as well. You know, there and then, that your next day is going to be a drag!
If you have been experiencing something like this for the past some time, you probably have a low sleep quotient.
Sleep Quotient Defined
There is a simple quiz that lets you know exactly where you stand on the sleepiness scale. The questions relate to how likely you are to feel the need to sleep or blink an eye during the various everyday activities such as watching TV, reading a book, talking to someone, etc. The options, in terms, ranging from ‘never’ (0 mark) to ‘rarely’ (1 mark), to ‘sometimes’ (2 marks) and ‘quite often’ (3 marks) This means that the more is the likelihood, the higher your score. For example, how often do you find yourself dozing off while watching TV? If you chose ‘never’, your score is zero. But if you chose quite often, your score is three, the highest for that particular question. Similarly, other questions include the chances of you falling asleep while – talking to someone, reading a book, taking a cab ride back home, etc. You are observed based on ten such questions, and at the end of the quiz, you calculate your score.
Sleepiness Scale Results
A low score indicates that you have a high sleep quotient and that you are lucky to be getting a good night’s sleep. That explains why you don’t find yourself dozing off at the slightest of opportunity. However, a high score indicates poor sleep quotient. This indicates that you are seriously sleep-deprived, which is why you remain excessively fatigued and drained out the next day. If that is the case, you should start making some amends in your lifestyle, and maybe you need some good medication or to even see a doctor.
If you happen to belong to the latter lot, do not lose heart as you are not alone. Unfortunate as it may sound, sleep problems are becoming increasingly common the world over. Everyone from old to middle-aged, to the youth and even children nowadays, has experienced the problem of sleeplessness now and then.
